Keeping Your Septic System Flowing With Proper Maintenance And Service

Blog

If you own a home that uses a septic system to manage wastewater leaving your home, taking care of it so that it will work properly is essential. While most septic systems do not need to be serviced by a septic tank maintenance company very often, your tank will require pumping and inspection eventually.

Maintaining Your Septic System

Septic tank service is not complicated, and if you take some precautions, you can improve the function of the tank, leach field, and other components in the system. Keeping the tank contents healthy is often the first step, and simple things like keeping grease, feminine products, and large amounts of paper out of the tank are important.

The bacteria in the tank is vital for the anaerobic process to work correctly, and adding food scraps or grease into the drains damages the balance in the tank. It can kill off the bacteria needed for the system to break down solid waste in the system properly. When that process breaks down, the tank will fill up quickly, and the only way to get things back on track is to pump the tank out, clean the interior, and start over.

A septic tank maintenance company can pump and clean the tank for you, but if you are careful about what goes into the system, you can avoid this situation and only need to pump the tank every few years.

Inspecting The Tank

Part of septic tank maintenance is an inspection of the tank after being in service for a couple of years. The inspection is commonly done every couple of years, but if you have an older system, a more frequent inspection can help find problems before they start.

The inspection will check for leaks, soggy spots on the drain field, sewerage backups in the house, slow drains, and the general function of the system. The inspector will also check the sludge depth in the tank and recommend pumping if needed, and look at the effluent filter to ensure it is working properly or recommend cleaning if it is not.

The inspector will leave you a detailed report that you can pass on to the septic tank service provider that you use so they can make repairs and clean anything that needs it.

Repairing The System

If the inspection of your septic system turned up any leaks or damage, your septic tank contractor can look at the areas of concern and make the required repairs to the system. The lines to the tank may need to be excavated to get to leaks, and the top of the tank uncovered to make repairs, but with proper septic tank maintenance, the chances of these kinds of problems are reduced.

Septic Services: Essential for the Home

When you think about professionals who work on your home, the first ones that come to mind might be HVAC technicians and maybe plumbers. But septic service workers are also essential. Without a working septic tank, you won't be able to flush away your waste, and you may even have smelly water all over your yard. Some plumbers also provide septic care services, but other times, you have to rely on a separate company to do this work. In either case, you can learn a bit more about septic services on this website, and we hope the information helps you take better care of your home.
